Meet your new Finder.

Messy Downloads, a full disk, project files everywhere. FileOS fixes all three, in one beautiful Mac app.

Smart Downloads

Your Downloads, sorted in one click.

Invoices, installers, screenshots and a video you forgot about, all in one pile.

Tidy moves every loose file into a folder for its kind. You see the plan before anything moves, and Undo puts it all back.

  • Want a look first? Group by kind or date added: each kind becomes a folder in its own color, and nothing moves on disk.
  • See what takes the space, kind by kind.
  • Spots installers for apps you already have, likely duplicates, and files untouched for 90 days.
  • Leaves files that are still downloading alone.

Smart Clean

Get gigabytes back, without the guesswork.

“Your disk is almost full.” Then twenty minutes in System Settings, guessing what's safe to delete.

FileOS shows how full your Mac is, then nine suggestions sorted into Safe to clear and Your call. Each one says why.

  • Safe to clear comes ticked: developer caches, duplicates (the copy you opened last is kept), installers for apps you have, and Mail's copies of attachments you opened.
  • Your call starts unticked: big files, apps you haven't opened in 6 months, old screen recordings, old downloads, leftovers of deleted apps.
  • Everything goes to the Trash first, and Undo brings it back. Empty Trash always asks.

Workspaces

Every project in one place, wherever its files live.

A workspace gathers folders and files from anywhere on your Mac onto one page. Nothing is copied or moved.

Bank statements in Downloads, receipts in iCloud Drive, payslips in Documents, last year's return on a backup drive. Now they're on one page, and nothing moved.

⌃1–⌃9Open a workspace⌥⌘NNew workspace

Dual pane

Two folders. One key between them.

Sorting downloads into a project, or copying photos to a drive, shouldn't mean dragging two Finder windows into place.

⌘D splits the window in two. F5 copies the selection to the other side, F6 moves it.

  • Drag across to move, hold ⌥ to copy
  • Long copies queue up, with progress and Cancel
  • A name clash asks: keep both, replace or skip
  • Both panes come back after a relaunch

For developers

Your projects, one key from your tools.

No more cd into a project just to type code ..

FileOS spots your git projects and works with the terminal and editor you already use.

  • Git at a glance: the branch and uncommitted changes in the path bar. Read-only: it never fetches, pulls or changes anything.
  • Type it in the path bar: code ., cursor ., xed ., zed, warp, terminal
  • Caches, cleared safely: Xcode DerivedData, device support, Simulator caches, npm, Homebrew, pip, Yarn and CocoaPods, from a strict list. node_modules in projects you haven't touched for 6 months is shown, never ticked.

Open in Terminal⌥⇧⌘T

The folder you're in, in your terminal. From the toolbar, a right-click or the keyboard.

Open in your editor⌥⇧⌘E

Pick your editor once in Settings, then open any folder in it.

Works with Terminal, iTerm, Warp and Ghostty; VS Code, Cursor, Zed, Xcode, Sublime Text, Nova, BBEdit and JetBrains IDEs, whichever you have installed.

Opens in whichever of these you have installed.

Design

Find the right file by sight.

Five PDFs called Invoice-final. Which one?

Every file shows a real preview: a document's first page, the photo, a video's frame, a slide. Folders show their size and item count before you open them. Native macOS, built in SwiftUI.

Files as cards, with a real preview

A document's first page, the photo, a video's frame, a slide. Pick Small, Medium or Large with ⌘+ and ⌘−.

Glass folders

Each shows its size and how many items it holds, with a symbol for what's inside.

A folder at a glance

Select a folder and the preview pane shows where it lives and what's inside, two levels deep.

Finder, or FileOS?

Compared with Finder in macOS 27. FileOS opens the same folders, so you can keep using both. FileOS is not made by or affiliated with Apple.

01

Nothing moves without a preview.

Tidy and Smart Clean show exactly what will happen before anything changes.

02

Everything can be undone.

Moves, copies, renames and Move to Trash all undo with ⌘Z. Empty Trash always asks first.

03

Your files stay on your Mac.

FileOS works with your folders right on your Mac. It never uploads your files or their names.

Hi, I'm Ankur. I'm building FileOS on my own because Finder kept slowing me down: a Downloads folder I never had time to sort, a “disk almost full” warning with no idea what was safe to delete, and every project scattered across folders, the cloud and a drive. So I'm making the file manager I wanted. Everything on this page is in the app today.

Use it instead of Finder or next to it. It opens the same folders, and copy and paste works between the two.

Yes. They're in the sidebar, as in Finder, and you can add their folders to a workspace.

Any Mac with macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

No, it's optional. Switch it on once and FileOS opens every folder, as Finder does. Without it, macOS asks the first time FileOS opens Downloads, Documents or the Desktop.

No. FileOS works with your folders on your Mac. It never uploads your files or their names.

Not without you seeing it. Each suggestion says why it's there. Only Safe-to-clear items come ticked; big files, apps and anything else that's your call start unticked. Everything goes to the Trash first, and Undo brings it back.
